Hellschreiber is a teleprinter system that emerged in the 1920s, similar in function to early facsimile (fax) technologies, transmitting text via sound. Each pixel of a character is represented as a brief audio burst, allowing for effective communication even in conditions of high noise and poor reception. The human brain plays a crucial role in decoding the received audio signals into recognizable characters.
This system was notably utilized by the German military during World War II for encrypted messaging, leveraging the ENIGMA machine for security. In contemporary times, Hellschreiber has found a niche among amateur radio operators worldwide, facilitating exchanges over shortwave radio frequencies.
The term "Feld Hellschreiber" translates to "bright field recorder," and the system is often referred to simply as "Hell." The software enables users to send and decode Feld Hell messages seamlessly. The decoded text is displayed continuously at the top of the screen while users can input text for transmission or select predefined canned messages, such as CQ calls.
Sound input is captured through the device's internal microphone from the radio's speaker, with transmitted audio played through the device's speaker. An additional option allows users to connect a patch cable from their device's headphone jack to their radio's microphone input for audio transmission.
Users can adjust display contrast via a slider, with an accompanying volume indicator on the interface to optimize visibility. To send text, users simply tap on the entry field and start typing; each character is dispatched as soon as feasible. Once sent, characters scroll off from the left side of the field and are displayed on the right side of the transmitted text area.
Canned text options are readily available; selecting one allows for instant transmission of preconfigured messages. For customization, users can access the Setup option to modify button names and associated texts.
Decoding messages is straightforward: open the app, position it near the radio's speaker or headphones, and watch as decoded text appears in real time. The user-friendly design streamlines the process of both sending and interpreting messages within this unique communication format.
